Moose hunt Day 4 (Part 3)- We’re gonna call this story the 620 yard heart shot on the wrong bull …
We spotted a big bull a mile away in the evening & when I looked at him in the spotter, I instantly recognized him. He was a bull that we have four years of sheds to, and he’s magnificent. He was at his prime in 2019 and has slowly gone backwards every year since. I’ve never, ever seen him on the hoof.
So when I saw him in the spotter for the first time, I about lost it. I was gonna go kill that bull, and he was well over 70” wide. He was working his way toward us but disappeared. We closed the distance and waited .5 mile from where we thought he would come out into our view for a shot opportunity.
After what seemed like an eternity, I saw paddles flashing in the trees close to that spot and it was game time. I ran in with the gun to get closer to 500. He was moving and covering ground quickly in and out of brush. I got set up quick and dialed the @gunwerks 338 when Brady started raking and he ran. I had to get him down before he was gone forever!
I cow called while on the gun, just something to stop him and it worked. For a split second I thought “huh, he looked bigger in the spotter” but I was committed so I let him have it. BOOM! 620 yards, perfect heart shot! He ran, then stopped and tipped over. I was in total disbelief. We were celebrating for like 5 minutes and were so pumped … until Brady said “would this be a bad time to tell you there’s another bull” …
I looked up, and Big Papa stepped out. I had gone into total kill mode & didn’t register it wasn’t him. (I have an any bull tag btw so I didn’t double check fronts or width)
I still got this beautiful bull down which I’m grateful for. I’m a sucker for the pretty ones. Shockingly he grows up not out so he’s only 55” wide, which blows my mind. He weighs more than some of our 70” bulls. He’s all points and mass and big paddles. I still beat myself up for it. Overall I was thrilled to have a bull down, and I made a great shot. It was just the principal of that mistake that still bothers me! Very cool to see Big Papa on the hoof though, who lives to see another day !
