Thursday was Windows day for thousands of computer buffs around the world as Microsoft launched its new product... but in Russia the Windows have been open for months.
It's not the official product however. While westerners camped outside computer stores to buy their new programs, Russians have been buying pirate copies.
Russian customs officials delayed the official launch of Windows 95, but failed to stop pirated copies from surfacing on the market months before the new software goes on sale in the U.S.
The official launch is scheduled for September 17, 1995. But less orthodox distributors have been selling alleged copies of the Microsoft product for at least six months.
In this shop, Windows 95 sells for about 40 U-S dollars, considerably less than the 100 U-S dollar asking price for the real version.
SOUNDBITE Russian:
"We got Windows 95 a few weeks ago. We've yet to see the official version though."

Computer sales staff recognize that the former Soviet Union is potentially a huge market. But they believe that piracy is taking a huge bite out of the profits.
Some remain optimistic.
SOUNDBITE Russian:
"Of course I don't want this kind of market to flourish because it doesn't just affect software but hardware too. Nevertheless, we don't expect to suffer too heavily."

Microsoft workers estimate that only four to six percent of software used in Russia is bought from official dealers. This brings about 800 (m) million dollars-a-year to illegal businesses selling pirated software and videos.
