Every Friday 7pm UK Time, 2pm ET, 11am PT. ******* Ki Tavo – ‘When you Come in’ Deuteronomy 26:1-29:9 The people of Israel are instructed to bring the ‘first-fruits’ of their land (the first and best of their harvest) as an offering to God, to show gratitude for the richness and fertility of the land that had been given to them. Linked to the idea of offering is the law of tithing, the third year being the ‘year of tithing’ whereby the people would give to the poor, needy and suffering alongside the Levite priests, as part of their tithing to God. Following this, Moses details the instructions for the pillar that Joshua would construct and then the giving of the blessings and curses, to be delivered on Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal respectively. The blessings that stem from obedience to the Torah are told to the people, however afterwards comes the one of the heaviest passages in the Torah: the prophetic rebuke for the nation and their future lawlessness. The blessings and the curses being juxtaposed in this way show the people the stark contrast between the fruits and consequences of obedience and those of disobedience. The rebuke consists of all of the terrible and horrifying things that will befall Israel when they fall into rebelliousness in the future (it is notable that there is no question of ‘if’, but ‘when’) . This is a devastating passage and one that outlines the importance of following God’s commands; truly a ‘matter of life or death’. After the intensity of the previous passage, the parsha concludes with something of a compliment to the current nation, that now, only after forty years of wandering have they attained the awareness needed to truly follow Yah’s path and live as a righteous nation in the Promised Land. ******* More Information Want to learn more?
