This tutorial will cover the basics of volumetric rendering in Blender.
We will cover the following topics:
The Volume Absorption Shader
- This shader is great for 'filled' volumes like water or coloured glass. Light rays entering a volume with the Volume Absorption shader applied have a chance of being absorped based on the density of the volume.
Volume Scatter Shader
- This shader is great for 'dust' and 'smoke' volumes. Light hitting a volume with the Volume Scatter shader applied have a chance of being scattered (diffused) depending on the density of the volume. This makes this shader ideal for clouds, smoke or light rays.
In most scenarios, when creating fire, smoke or dust, you will combine the Volume Absorption and Volume Scatter shaders using the Node Eeditor. I will cover how to use the Node Editor in Blender in a future tutorial :)
Creating Light Rays & Glowing Volumes
- Finally I will show you how to create volumetric lighting effects such as light rays (god rays) and how to create glowing volumes.
