North Korea launched hundreds of balloons carrying trash and excrement across the heavily-fortified border to South Korea, calling them “gifts of sincerity.”

South Korea’s military mobilized chemical and explosive response teams to recover objects and debris throughout the country, responding by saying the act was dangerous.

The South Korean military released some images of the inflated balloons with plastic bags tied to them. The word “excrement” was written on at least one of the bags.

An estimated 260 balloons had been detected by Wednesday afternoon, most of which were carrying feces and rubbish, the South Korean military said.

North Korea said the balloons were in retaliation for an ongoing propaganda campaign by North Korean defectors and activists in South Korea, who regularly send inflatables containing anti-Pyongyang leaflets, alongside food, medicine, money and USB sticks loaded with K-pop music videos and dramas across the border.

Dr. Edward Howell at the University of Oxford joined LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow to discuss the bizarre incident.
