Replacing the best car you've ever made is always a hard task for a manufacturer, and nobody knows this better than Volkswagen, who attempted for decades to replace the Beetle. But once they'd managed it with the Mk1 Golf, they weren't going to let it happen again, and with the Mk2 Golf of 1983, they cemented the philosophy and mantra that Volkswagen follows to this day.
