At the very last minute, I decided to head to Lake Calhoun to capture this storm coming through. I wasn't expecting it to be this bad.
This was a long duration storm with winds up to 70 m.p.h. Many trees were uprooted, torn in half, and blocked streets throughout Minneapolis. I was one of the very few lucky ones whose route home wasn't blocked by trees, and those that fell did so parallel on either side of the street I was driving on when I left the lake.
People were a bit shook up after the storm and really became bummed out when they realized they had no electricity when they got home. Power was out for 500,000 homes and businesses. Excel Energy remarked that this was the worst storm in their history. I only lost 24 hours of power, but many went days longer.
This was the second damaging wind event for the Twin Cities that day. Most of the winds from the first storm affected regions north of Minneapolis and in St. Paul around 3:30 a.m . The second storm came in that evening and moved through the center of Hennepin Co, through all of Ramsey Co. and travelled as far east as Hudson, WI. Up to 3" of rain fell in less than 1/2 hour producing incredible amounts of flooding everywhere.
Loring Park, Parade stadium, and the Sculpture gardens sustained major tree losses from this storm - these places are just a small walking distance to skyscrapers in Minneapolis. I talked to people who say they were rerouted and rerouted and rerouted trying to make it home, some say it took at least a couple of hours.
As I type this now, August 3rd, 2013, many uprooted tree stumps and ripped up sidewalks still prevail throughout where I live. UPDATE - Oct 21st, 2013 - 99% of sidewalks are fixed and saplings planted throughout the city that lost trees.
