Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 12 miles west of Oxford, is the town of Witney.

The first recorded reference to the town dates back to circa 969 AD where it was written as 'Wyttannige'. Its name derives from Old English for 'Witta's island' (N.B. 'island' in this sense may also refer to dry ground surrounded by marsh). It is believed that a Saxon King’s Council, known as the Witan, met here.

By the early 13th century, Witney was host to a weekly market. Being located a short distance from the Cotswolds, one of its main industries was wool. In particular, Witney became known for its woollen blankets. The first fulling mill recorded here dates back to 1223. The mills were powered by the River Windrush which runs through the town. At the peak of the industry, the blankets were exported all over the world. It wasn't until 2002 that the last blanket-making company in the town closed down.

At the southern end of the town centre is St Mary's Church. This dates mostly from the 13th century and reflects the wealth of Witney at this time owing to the aforementioned wool trade. The church is Grade I listed. Also of note architecturally is the buttercross (i.e. a sheltered market cross where dairy was traded). This dates from the late 16th or early 17th century, and features a clock turret from 1683 which was added following a bequest from a local draper. Across the road from the buttercross is Witney Town Hall, which was completed in 1786.

In 1861 a railway station opened in Witney. This was the western terminus of a branch line linking up to Yarnton (a village five miles north of Oxford city centre). This was converted to a goods depot and replaced by a new station in 1873, which closed to passengers in 1962, and to goods in 1965. Today, public transport to Witney consists of buses from Oxford, Cheltenham and various nearby towns and villages.
