Joseph John Thomson, also known as J. J. Thomson, was a British physicist who lived from 1856 to 1940. He is best known for his discovery of the electron and his work on the nature of cathode rays. Thomson was a professor of physics at the University of Cambridge and made significant contributions to the study of electromagnetic waves. He proposed the "plum pudding" model of the atom, suggesting that atoms were made up of a positively charged substance with negatively charged electrons embedded in it. His discovery of the electron earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906. Thomson was also a Fellow of the Royal Society and served as its president from 1915 to 1920. He was knighted in 1908 and awarded the Order of Merit in 1912. Thomson's work continues to influence modern physics and technology.
