Poet, lyricist and singer Atulprasad Sen was born in Dhaka on 20 October 1871. His boyhood was spent at his maternal grandfather’s residence, in an artistic milieu. After finishing his studies in Kolkata, he was called to the Bar in London. He practiced law in Kolkata and Rangpur, and later settled in Lucknow. Atulprasad is one of the few poets who evolved a distinct literary style at a time when the overall literary scene was greatly influenced by Tagore. The difficult circumstances of his personal life and estrangement, led to an introspection that infused his lyrics with a compelling pathos. The introduction of raga-based Bengali songs, especially the adoption of the thumri style, is attributed to him. Although Atulprasad wrote just over 200 songs, the originality of his compositions earned him a memorable place in the world of Bengali music. He died in Lucknow on 26 August 1934.

Bengal Foundation is pleased to present a selection of recordings of the songs of Atulprasad Sen, to mark the composer’s 89th death anniversary. In these recordings, the singers have beautifully captured the extraordinary pathos and wistfulness that are hallmarks of Atulprasad Sen’s compositions.
