How to install Gentoo - specifically on 32-bit Intel architecture but will work on 64-bit Intel too.
Availability of 32-bit Linux distributions is diminishing - not surprising given the limitations of 32-bit hardware. But how do you keep an old 32-bit machine running and up-to-date with the latest security and application software in 2021 and beyond? One answer is to build your own Linux distribution using Gentoo.
I always see Gentoo as the next stage up from LFS: it's still compiled from source (slightly modified and/or patched where necessary) but the configuration and maintenance is so much easier. Not only can you easily add and remove packages just as you would with any other run-of-the-mill distribution, you can also tune the features that are compiled in to the packages. If you decide you want to adjust the feature after you've installed the package that's not a problem. Make the configuration change (usually just a single word) and recompile the package. Any dependencies are (re)compiled and redundant packages are removed. The only cost of this unique flexibility is the time it takes to do the compiling.
Another bonus that you won't get with other most other distributions is the possibility to tune the compilations to your processor architecture which in theory means your binaries should have superior performance.
*NOTE*: These videos demonstrate installing Gentoo on a 32-bit machine. Of course, you can build Gentoo on a 64-bit machine but be aware you then have three options:
1. Build pure 32-bit binaries on 64-bit hardware (Can't see why you'd do this)
2. Build 32-bit and 64-bit binaries (called multilib)
3. Build pure 64-bit binaries (called no-multilib in Gentoo)
For option 1, follow the "x86 Handbook" as I do in this series of videos.
For options 2 and 3 follow the "AMD 64 (x86_64) Handbook". The main differences are the partition selection (GPT vs MBR), booting method (UEFI vs BIOS) and profile selection (multilib vs no-multilib).
