Tuesday 16 January 2024, a regional demonstration of farmers has been organised in Toulouse. The unions calling to protest were the FNSEA, an often-controversed organisation ; and the Young Farmers, another union, officially independent, but sometimes considered to be under the influence of the FNSEA.
This demonstration reached Toulouse after some slow-downs on the major roads leading to the city, and manure as well as other agricultural matter has been dumped in some places of the city. They were the government's services in the Compans-Caffarelli district, blocking Lascrosses and Duportal boulevards at the same time, the Adour-Garonne water agency on Férétra Street in the Empalot district, and also the payment agency located in Balma, a city in a close suburb of Toulouse.
At the end of the morning and beginning of the afternoon, a barbecue has been organised in the front of the famous Capitole, the city hall.
The farmers are complaining of an increase of their production costs and to have too many administrative tasks and taxes, and they estimate having an unfair competition against imported products. They also want an easier access to water resources.
Received at the prefecture between 13:00 and 16:00, they consider that they haven't been heard and got out upset of the meeting.
They after quitted downtown Toulouse and organised a blockade at the entrance of the airport, until late on the evening.
This movement, that also has seen some demonstrations in other French cities, seems to look like the one actually going on in Germany.
The municipality of Toulouse hoped, probably naively, that the farmers would clean the results of their demonstration ; which didn't happen.
The municipality actually filled a complaint after the last farmers' protest on the 22 November 2023, especially because of the destruction of Jules Guesde Alleys' lawn, with a repair cost of €5500, and the damaging of the trees of these alleys. The cleaning costed €7500 to the city.
For this new demo, the municipality again filled a complaint.
