Lumbar decompression is a surgical procedure in which a small portion of the bone over the nerve root is removed to give the pinched nerve root more space. The total recovery period is 6 to 12 weeks. The required hospital stay is 1 to 4 days.

For the first few weeks, a liquid diet is recommended until solid foods can be tolerated. A back brace should be used to provide support and help with pain control. Start light walking for exercise, this will help speed your recovery. Avoid activities such as swimming, bathing, and hot tubs until the incision site has completely healed.

Avoid long plane flights or car rides. If you travel, stand and walk around once an hour or so. Try not to sit or stand in the same position for more than 15-20 minutes.

Driving may be resumed after 3 weeks, only short trips are advised.
You can return to light activity (desk work and light housekeeping) within 3 to 4 weeks.

People return to work after 4 to 6 weeks, and the job isn't too strenuous. If your job involves strenuous activities, you may resume back after 12 weeks. If any activity increases your pain, you should stop it immediately.
