The Robin Hood Dell Orchestra of Philadelphia, Morton Gould, pianist and conductor.

Recorded August 1, 1947, in the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, on American Columbia matrices XCO 39039 through 39042.  Issued early in 1948 as Columbia Masterworks Set MX-289 (78-rpm records 12674-D and 12675-D).

Morton Gould's American Concertette is a miniature concerto for piano and orchestra, written in 1943 for José Iturbi.  It was adapted as a ballet by Jerome Robbins in 1945, at which time it received the title "Interplay" - which the composer came to strongly prefer.  There are four movements:

1. With Drive and Vigor
2. Gavotte (at 4:11)
3. Blues (at 6:35)
4. Very Fast (at 10:46)

In the liner notes for this album, Morton Gould provided the following notes about the music:

"The first movement is described by the tempo mark 'With Vigor and Drive,' and is very rhythmic and brash in the accepted classical form of two contrasting themes and a short development.  The second movement is a Gavotte.  It is a gay, short dance with a sly glance back to the classical mode.  The third movement is a Blues and is what the title implies - a very simple and, in spots, 'dirty' type of slow, nostalgic mood.  The fourth and last movement - 'Very fast' - brings the work to a rouseing and exciting close."
