Trying to decide between the KTM 390 Duke and the Speed 400. They might have some similarity in specification but they are totally different kinds of motorcycles and a test ride, even a short one will eliminate most of the confusion. Here are the three biggest differences. First- The KTM is the more aggressive, more powerful and vastly sportier bike among the two, be it in the way it looks or the performance of the engine. It is also far more feature loaded than the Triumph but it also cost significantly more. Second- In comparison, the Triumph Speed 400 is not slow but it is definitely more mild-mannered and its setup as a retro-roadster and therefore is not, and doesn't not feel sporty in the sharp way of the KTM. This is not a bad thing but this preference, to us, is the key reason to choose one over the other. Quality levels on both are similar but the Triumph will feel better finished. Third, both have some amount of vibration. The Triumph is smoothest below 6,000rpm and the KTM gets smoother the more you rev it out. It underlines that difference is nature and is something you should figure out your comfort with during your test ride. Do remember that since Triumph is building out its sales and service network, for the moment depending on where you live, it might be hard or impossible actually buy a Speed 400.
