Mention John Dudley’s name and
Mention John Dudley’s name and many will say he is the world’s most renown archery coach. Some will say he’s self made, self titled, and self appointed to that accolade. Regardless of which side of the fence you fall on, it’s hard to argue his tremendous success and rise modern stardom.
Born on June 14th 1976. John Dudley grew up in the Mississippi Delta where he gained his interest in hunting from his Uncle Kenny and his Grandfather around the age of 10.
Later in his youth, Dudley moved to Northern Illinois where he would finish High School as the star quarterback of Johnsburg Higschool. Growing up Dudley would often be in the spotlight but not always for good reason. In fact his youth was quit troublesome as he would get into his fair share of childhood trouble. As a self noted Pyro one circumstance lead to burning his parents house to the ground and he talks openly about stealing cars for joy rides. Dudley credits archery and hunting to not going to jail as a troubled kid.
As fate would have it Dudley, grew out of the troublesome kid and became an highly touted athlete. He was offered a college scholarship to play college football but that came with a catch…. Move to a less than desirable whitetail state, commit the next 4 or 5 years to football, and set archery hunting aside. After a very quick stint on campus, Dudley realized archery was his passion and what he desired to pursue.
As a college drop out, Dudley moved back home and began working for a local archery shop. He quickly became obsessed with archery as he would travel to every local archery event he could find. He recalls the older guys considering him the annoying kid getting in the way and asking too many questions.
That annoying kid quickly began winning local shoots, even being consistent enough in his winnings to warranty other competitors requesting someone else to follow him through courses to ensure his score card was accurate.
As Dudley’s skills progressed, he turned to target archery and eventually went pro in 1997 where he won Rookie of the Year in the Association of Professional Archers. Dudley’s talents with a bow and arrow would take him all over the world compiling an impressive list of awards and accomplishments.

* U.S. Open Silver Medalist
* U.S. Open Gold Medal Team
* 45 Career Top 3 Professional finishes
But once again the passion for hunting and scheduling conflicts forced Dudley into a surprising decision.
As a member of the US archery team Dudley decide to abruptly walk away because of the Archery World Cup schedule conflicted with Elk Season. Dudley says the decision was made because we wanted to hunt more than shoot archery tournaments, other’s say he walked away because he wasn’t good enough to win. The truth of the matter is that we will never know!
Dudley’s decision ended up paying big dividends. As he pursued a career in the archery hunting world, people quickly took to Dudley’s informative content. In fact, several well known bowhunting celebrities like Joe Rogan and former Navy Seal Jocko Willink credit Dudley for teaching them the skills and technique required to bow hunt successfully at a high level. Dudley often talks about struggles and how the bad times during a hunt can quickly bring out the true character of a person….
It’s no surprise Dudley’s personal circle includes the names of Joe Rogan, Cameron Hanes, and Jocko Willink amongst other high profile hunters but there’s more to it than just hunting.
Beyond just hunting for personal reasons, Dudley has created the brand NOCK ON which includes both products and education information. Nock On first saw the light of day during the late 90s as a TV show on the TNN network. Nock On has now transitioned to mostly digital content that includes a podcast. Today Nock On is known as the premier online sources for archery tips, instruction, and education for any level of archer.
In addition to the NOCK ON brand, John has had his hand in several product development projects with other companies which includes the newest lineup of PSE compound bows.
Even in today’s world of social media stardom, John Dudley’s focus and mission has never changed. Since day one his priority has been to be the best archer, hunter, and teacher in the world. Looking back over the last 20 plus years, I’d say he’s doing a fine job at each.
