The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is an organization under the Ministry of Culture in India that is responsible for the archaeological research and the conservation and preservation of ancient monuments and sites in the country. The ASI was established in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham, a British archaeologist and the first Director-General of the ASI. The organization conducts excavations, surveys, and conservation work on ancient structures and artifacts throughout India, and also manages over 3,600 centrally protected monuments and sites. The ASI also maintains museums and manages archaeological parks and sites open to the public.
