This is Nandaimon, 'The Great Southern Gate' of Todaiji Temple.

・It was built in 1199 to replace the original gate which was destroyed by a typhoon.

・At 25 meters in height and 29 meters in width it is the largest gate of its kind in Japan.

・The eighteen 21 meter tall pillars that support the Nandaimon are made from Japanese cypress trees that were felled in the mountains of Yamaguchi Prefecture about 400 kilometers away.

・The two 8.4 meter (28 foot) tall Nio guardian statues, in alcoves on either side of the gate, were carved by the artists Unkei and Kaikei and completed and installed in 1203.

・Each statue weighs 7 tons. They are impressive monuments to the technological hurdles their creators overcame to make them in the 13th century.

・Neither Nio statue was moved from its position in the Nandaimon until conservation work was done in 1991.
