Mercedes has pulled the covers off its new, lengthened E-Class L in China, half a year after the launch of the standard W214. The long-wheelbase version of the executive sedan is a cheaper alternative to the larger S-Class flagship and offers plenty of space, technology and comfort for rear passengers.
Visually, the E-Class L stands out with longer rear doors, thicker C-pillars and special badging on the rear quarter glass and D-pillars, making it look more like a Maybach. The rest of the design is carried over from the regular E-Class, along with the classic star badge on the grille, LED taillights and puddle lamps. Naturally, the AMG Line features different wheels, sportier bumpers and a model-specific illuminated grille that differentiates it from the smaller trims with traditional bonnet ornaments.
The China-spec Mercedes-Benz E-Class L is 5,092 mm (200.4 in) long, 143 mm (5.6 in) longer than the regular E-Class. 5.2 of the extra inches go to the extended 3,094 mm (121.8 in) wheelbase.
Looking inside, the instrument cluster is carried over from the E-Class, including the current hyperscreen consisting of three large screens, although it features region-specific graphics and apps. Rear passengers benefit from increased legroom, reclining seat backs and electrically adjustable leg rests.
Extra amenities include a neck warming function in the rear headrests, a dual-phone wireless charging pad integrated into the armrest, and a high-end Burmester sound system with seat vibration effects. There's also a special button to power fold the front passenger seat so you can stretch your legs while being chauffeured. The door cards look different on the long-wheelbase E-Class; ambient lighting strips go up and behind the rear headrests, providing a better quality environment. However, the model does not have extra screens for those sitting in the back.
In China, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class L will reportedly be offered in two configurations with a 4-cylinder engine: the E270L with 201 hp (150kW / 204 PS) and the more powerful E300L with 255 hp (190kW / 258 PS). . It is also expected that the series will expand with more options in the future. The E-Class L is equipped with air suspension and rear steering.
Sales of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class L will start in China in the coming months. As reported by Autocar India, the model will also be available in the Indian market in the second half of 2024. This is the fourth body style version of the new E-Class, following the regular sedan, the more practical Estate and the adventurous All.
