In this video, we explain the concept of risk. Everyone uses the term 'Risk' very loosely. But what is risk? And how does it matter when you make investments?
Every investment has some element of risk involved in it. In case of debt instruments like corporate bonds or debentures, there is a risk that you will not get your capital back. This is called default risk. There is a risk that the company will go bankrupt because of bad business conditions. This is called business risk.
Market Risk is the risk that the money you invest will reduce because of fluctuations in prices. Most investments have some element of risk. But as an investor, you need to understand these risks and then decide where to put your money.
If you had Rs. 100, how much money could you afford to lose? Rs. 10? Rs. 20? Rs. 50?
There is no correct answer for all of this. It depends on each individual. So based on your risk profile, you can build your portfolio.
There are lot of websites that have information on risk, so do take some time out to learn and understand about this. It will help you plan your investments and understand your behaviour.
There are many tools to understand your risk appetite and invest in the options that suit your needs the best.
Consider your investment as a good diet plan. You must have a good balance of all the necessary nutrients to live a healthy life. You must consider these three things before you invest:
1. Your time horizon: for how long can you stay invested?
2. Your goals: what do you plan to do with that money?
3. Your risk appetite
