Panzerwerfer 42 - The "German Katyusha"

Panzerwerfer 42 the German self-propelled MRLS of the Second World War period. Created in 1942 on the basis of a semi-tracked truck Opel Maultier.

During serial production in 1943 - 1944 approximately 300 were produced, as well as 289 ammunition carriers on the same base.
Until the end of 1943, 248 launchers and 232 ammunition carriers were made, and in 1944, 52 launchers and 57 ammunition carriers.

Panzerwerfer 42 was actively used by German troops until the end of the war, but due to the relatively small number of them, they did not have a serious impact on the course of the hostilities.

Missile mortar " Nebelwerfer 41" fired 34-pound projectiles at a distance of 7 km.

The launch was carried out remotely by wire.

The volley lasted about 10 seconds. The smoke trail left by the shells was an excellent reference for the enemy’s artillery, so the calculation required a change of position as soon as possible.
The main drawback of the mortar was the low mobility, due to which it could become easy prey for enemy artillery.

To overcome this drawback, the mortar began to be installed on a semi-tracked chassis. This was called “Panzerwerfer”.

The vehicle was protected by 6-8 mm armor. The armor is closed to the engine, the driver’s cabin and the fighting compartment, located in the rear part of the installation above the tracks.
In the rear wall of the fighting compartment there is a hatch for the crew to enter, which is closed by a door.
In the roof of the fighting compartment, in front of it, a hatch is cut through, a rotating armored dome is mounted behind it.

A swivel is welded to it, in the trunnion sockets of which the swinging part of the mortar is suspended.
It consists of ten trunks, arranged in two rows, connected in one block by two clips and a casing.

In the fighting compartment, a gunner's seat is attached to the rotating armored dome, which rotates along with the armored dome and mortar in horizontal guidance.

Vertical guidance is carried out using a screw-type mechanism. For self-defense and firing at anti-aircraft targets above the driver's cabin there is a bracket for mounting 7.92 mm. MG-34 machine gun.
The crew consists of 4 people: the commander of the car (he is the radio operator), the gunner, the loader and the driver.
The car commander and driver are in the cab. Charging - in front of the crew compartment, under the hatch, which is closed when fired from a mortar.

The unit’s ammunition consists of 20 rockets, of which 10 are in the mortar tubes, and 10 are secured in slots in the fighting compartment. The mortar is charged from the breech by hand through the hatch in the roof.
