We have all most likely heard of eating papaya for not only its health benefits, but also for its amazing taste. When we buy papaya, we tend to generally eat the fruit, and throw out the seeds without thinking twice about it. We may want to give this a second thought however, since these seeds can be quite beneficial for our bodies and even help prevent certain unwanted ailments. Please note, discuss with your medical practitioner before consuming papaya seeds to make sure they are okay to consume for you. There have been warnings about their use for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as younger children, so please discuss with your doctor before consuming them.

1. First, papaya seeds are especially helpful for promoting our overall liver health. They contain important nutrients that can help heal damage caused by cirrhosis of the liver. By eating smaller amounts of papaya seeds consistently, this can also help with detoxifying our liver and helps to stop unwanted diseases. As well, it can also help in the removal of unwanted toxins from the liver and body.

2. Papaya seeds also have tremendous anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Again, only a small amount of seeds consumed consistently has been found to be helpful in the treatment of harmful bacteria such as salmonella, staph and E.coli. They can also be helpful to work against different viral infections and other diseases as well, such as fever. If you are dealing with any symptoms related to these ailments, you should also consult your medical practitioner for further treatment.

3. They can also help to improve digestion. Both papaya seeds and unripe papaya contain high amounts of an enzyme known as papain. Papain is beneficial for protein digestion but again should be avoided by women who are pregnant. Papain may also help to change the intestinal environment to one that is more favourable for “good” bacteria to thrive while stopping “bad” bacteria.

4. Papaya seeds also contain anti-inflammatory properties and help to get rid of inflammation through out the entire body. This makes them especially helpful for those individuals who are suffering from symptoms of arthritis, pain and swelling. As well, this could also have benefits for the overall health of our skin and inflammation in the body is reduced.

5. They can also have benefits for helping to rid your body of unwanted parasites and intestinal worms. Again, this is largely due to the presence of papain found in papaya seeds, as well as an alkaloid known as carpaine. Much like papain breakdown undigested protein waste in the food we eat, it may also be able to breakdown parasites found in the body. It also helps to make the gastrointestinal tract a hard place for parasites to survive and thrive in.

6. Lastly, papaya seeds can also be used to help improve our overall kidney health and prevent renal failure as some research has indicated. This can help with some kidney related diseases and also help promote the overall health of our bodies since our kidneys are involved in a number of important bodily processes.

When eating papaya seeds, you don’t have to eat them in large amounts to obtain these benefits. Only a few seeds can go a long way in promoting our overall health. They can be eaten raw, or more simply grounded or crushed and added to your favourite smoothies recipe or salad. Again, discuss with your doctor before consuming them to make sure papaya seeds are right for you.
