The Night of Hercules Brown (1968) TV Special: Muppets, Shari Lewis, Ritts Puppets (Lost Media)

This special features The Muppets, Shari Lewis, Lamb Chop, and the more obscure puppet group, The Ritts Puppets. The main plot of the special is about a boy named Hercules Brown, (played by Solomon Levin) who is guided into his dreams by Barnaby and encounters the various puppets. His first dream is of Kermit the Frog (performing "The Glow-Worm"; Barnaby refers to him as an "old bully frog"). After a segment with the Ritts animal puppets, Barnaby talks about doing the impossible, which leads into "Happy Girl Meets a Monster" performed by Beautiful Day Monster and Suzy (Barnaby calls after her, "So long, Sue! Come back in another dream!"). Immediately after, Barnaby and Hercules walk to a wall and meet Rowlf ("So either I'm a handsome dog or a very ugly person.") Rowlf explains how all dogs can talk and reports an intellectual discussion he had with fellow canine Skipper. He says humans don't hear dogs talk because most of what they have to say is dull, about eating, sleeping, and chasing cats. This special seemed like it was lost for decades, which material of the special wouldn’t surface until on January 12, 2022, the National Archives site made a post that they found a copy of the special and uploaded a clip of Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop from the special which they got permission by Sheri Lewis's daughter Mallory Lewis. On January 25, 2024, the full special was uploaded by YouTuber Dan O’Shannon, which after over 55 years, the special was finally found. But there was also a Spanish dub made for the special which would’ve been one of the first Muppets productions to have an international dub which this was years before Sesame Street and The Muppet Show had international dubs. Unfortunately the Spanish dub has yet to surface online, which is completely lost. But at the very least, the special is now available for the public to watch after it has been missing for over five decades.
