The national emblem for the United States since 1782, the bald eagle is an iconic bird that roams the skies and trees of Mount Airy.

As a part of the Town's year long celebration of avian awareness, Town staff headed to Carroll County Recreation and Parks Hashawha Environmental Center and Bear Branch Nature Center in Westminster to learn more about raptors.

While many believe bald eagles catch all of their food, they are opportunistic eaters. They are actually similar to vultures as they will steal food from other raptors or eat carrion on the side of the road. They also don't sound like they do in the movies as filmmakers will often use a red tailed hawk caw instead.
