We had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful city of Alicante, Spain. There’s a lot to see in this area in one day. We truly enjoyed a city tour, walking the world famous Explanada Promenade and discovering the Santa Barbara Castle. This is a must do when in Alicante.

Alicante is located on the southeastern coast of Spain along the Mediterranean Sea. The first thing you'll notice when you arrive is the dominating sight of Santa Barbara Castle!

You'll see incredible craftsmanship and history around every corner in Alicante. One place you don't want to miss is City Hall. Its facade and huge ornate door are impressive, but the real treasure lies inside is an incredible gold statue of John the Baptist created by Salvador Dali in 1973.

The Basilica of Santa María, the oldest church in Alicante is a landmark to know. From this vantage point, you'll see a clearing between two buildings revealing the natural 'Head of the Moor' in the rock. This rock formation looks like a Moorish king with his crown.

The Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante boasts a rich history that dates back to the 9th century. It was originally built by the Moors during the Islamic rule of Spain. Over the centuries, it has seen various occupants, including the Castilians, who captured it in the 13th century during the Reconquista, and later the French during the War of the Spanish Succession.

There are several special highlights within Santa Barbara Castle:

1. The Keep : The highest point of the castle and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Alicante and the Mediterranean Sea.

2. The Macho del Castillo: The oldest part of the castle, where you can see remnants of the original Moorish fortress.

3. The English Bastion: Named after the English troops who attempted to seize the castle, this area provides historical context and strategic viewpoints.

4. The Governor's House : This building houses a museum with exhibits on the history of the castle and the city of Alicante.

5. The Dungeons: These eerie chambers give a glimpse into the castle's past as a place of imprisonment.

Visiting Santa Barbara Castle offers not only a journey through history but also stunning vistas and a deeper understanding of Alicante's cultural heritage.
