What most people struggle with when it comes to improvising, is having a good sense of timing.
Sure, choosing notes is very important, but the best notes in your solo won't sound good if you don't have your timing sorted out. So, this exercise is a great way to address that problem.
I use this exercise all the time and I'm sure it will help you too. Very simply, we are just practicing making up interesting jazz lines using the blues scale, but always working with a metronome. The aim of the exercise is to be "in time" with the metronome, while making interesting, but simple melodies.
