"They are excited because they haven't been paid for two or three months and they have blocked the road. There is a meeting going on in the palace to decide how this will be resolved and the meeting has decided that they will be
paid on Tuesday morning at eight o'clock and following payment this should solve the problem. In the meantime they want to see some action."

STORYLINE:
Demonstrators gathered at a British Army checkpoint in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Sunday protesting at the checks being carried out by soldiers.
Some of the protesters were former members of the Iraqi army claiming that a local former officer had stolen money owed to them as wages.
The commander of the British troops at the scene said the men would be paid by Tuesday morning. There had been other protests over the matter in the area earlier in the weekend.
The protesters said that if the issue was not resolved they would begin attacking the checkpoint.
The demonstrators were also angry that soldiers were confiscating weapons. They said they needed the arms to defend themselves.
Soldiers also found one Iraqi with firearms and knives at the checkpoint and took them from him.
