This homemade flat lap cost
This homemade flat lap cost me about $100 and can be made in 3-4 hours. I attempted to show every step and be as thorough as possible - but of course there are some things that may still remain unclear. If you decide to make this flat lap on your own - feel free to post questions/concerns in the comments section and I will respond.
This flat lap is capable of grinding & polishing a variety of rocks and semi-precious gemstones. In this video I demonstrate its ability to create perfect cabochons as well as polished flat sided mineral specimens. The rocks in the demonstration are a small rough piece of kokoweef stalactite and a rough piece of chevron amethyst.
Materials/tools needed:
Piece of wood (2 ft/3 ft)
Three metal brackets
2 speed Swamp cooler motor ½ HP
Power cord with Bare wire ends
Three Wires with pre-crimped terminals
3 way 2 speed toggle switch
Motor arbor extender
Two 12 inch duct clamps
1 inch PVC pipe
Two plastic planters – Large enough to cover motor
Gorilla glue
Drill W/½ drill bit
Screwdriver
Wood Screws
Mini water fountain submersible pump
Water valve and tubing to go with it
8 inch master lap (Plastic)
8 inch 100 grit diamond flat lap disc
8 inch 220 grit diamond flat lap disc
8 inch 600 grit diamond flat lap disc
8 inch self-adhesive Lapidary Felt pads
Polishing compound of your choice – 100 thousand grit Diamond paste works well
