Rasikapriya, the 72nd melakarta raga has been creatively explored by Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman in a jathiswaram he specially composed for the veteran dancer Smt. Kamala. This jathiswaram shines as yet another jewel on his gem-studded crown. The living legend, danseuse Padma Subrahmanyam choreographed this jathiswaram exquisitely in her inimitable style, featuring various interesting games from the diverse ancient cultures of India, like Pandi (the Indian hopscotch), blindfolding and playing catch with floral balls. Awed by the creative genius of Lalgudi Sir, she has said that it only takes a keen listening of the musical movement in his compositions to automatically comprehend the mood behind it, and the choreography just naturally falls into place almost by itself!
The magic of such a beautiful composition has been woven together by Lalgudi GJR Krishnan along with his disciples in this video presentation.
Lalgudi GJR Krishnan feels there is no greater joy than sharing and passing on the art in all its purity, with all its intricacies and nuances, and without any compromise to the next generation. It deserves special mention that the disciples featured in this tribute have come together from Australia, Malaysia, UK, USA and India. They came under the tutelage of Sri. Krishnan after strengthening their foundation in music under other eminent gurus. All of them are very talented musicians, active solo violinists and accompanists, widely performing in India, USA and many other countries, with some being themselves teachers of violin and vocal music. In addition, they each have worthy academic accomplishments to their credit.
