Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656) : "A Sad Pavan for these distracted times".
Lydia Maria Blank - harpsichord.
This wonderful Pavan in reality is a Lament which the composer (who was 76 or 77 years old) wrote on the death of King Charles I. (on the picture), who has been executed on January 30, 1649. Tomkins' piece is dated "February 14, 1649".
At the end of the 2. Part of the Pavan you can here the ringing of the church bells, and in the 3. Part the soul of the king ascends into heaven.
