The beautiful A8 is the flagship vehicle of the German vehicle manufacturer Audi and is a marvel of technology. They were made with a complicated and expensive air suspension system that relies on feedback from electronic sensors located throughout the vehicle. Based on data provided by the sensors, an onboard computer tells an air compressor when to pump up rubber air bladders that take the place of conventional steel coil springs to lift and support the vehicle.
As reliable as these great German vehicles may be, the air suspension system will eventually fail due to age or mileage. The most common failure happens when tiny cracks develop in the rubber portion of the system. Air begins to seep at first, then leak more rapidly over time. The leaks cause the onboard air compressor to get overworked to the point of either intermittent or complete failure.
Once this happens, the vehicle will experience an immediate three to five inch loss of ride height and become almost undriveable.
With an older, higher mileage vehicle, a potential dealer repair of five to seven thousand dollars to go through the system is cost prohibitive.
