Dirait-On / Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943) From our December 2018 program titled "Winter Reflections" TEXT Abandon entouré d'abandon tendresse touchant aux tendresses… C'est ton intérieur qui sans cesse se caresse, dirait-on; Se caresse en soi-même, par son propre reflet éclairé. Ainsi tu inventes le thème du Narcisse exaucé. TRANSLATION Abandon surrounds abandon, tenderness touches tenderness. . . You'd think your center would caress itself on and on and on. . . caress itself in itself and seem to glow with its own image. Thus you invent the theme of the fulfilled Narcissus. – translated by A. Poulin, Jr. (1938–1996) In the season of darkness, we seek light. In the season of stillness, we look deep into our souls and ponder life. This program was an exploration of winter wisdom from sacred and secular traditions found in an ancient Greek Orthodox hymn, an Aboriginal songline, a soft Jewish Shabbat eve tune, a contemporary interpretation of early Chinese philosophy from the I Ching, and a unique rendition of In the Bleak Midwinter, by American composer Frances McCollin, whose blindness in early childhood caused her to see colors when hearing music.
