For us today, it is almost a matter of course that, when parking, we hear sounds signalling how close we are to nearby obstacles. Most cars have assistance systems for parking which measure the distance between it and other vehicles, walls or objects and, so make it easier to park. The requirements for object recognition are, however, very diverse. This is directly related to the autonomous driving of the future. Further development of this technology is conditional upon the existence of diverse high-tech driver assistance systems, which must always be correctly set and work properly.

EDSCENE – VALIDATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL SENSORS
With the EDscene brand, the EDAG Group has developed a tool set for the validation of environmental sensors for vehicles. In the course of many years, we have specialised in parking sensors, and optimised the test procedure. Our test systems carry out automated tests on the actual complete vehicle. Not only does this help to save time and money, but also delivers results with a high degree of accuracy – in top quality and efficiently. And with EDscene, we have developed a portable solution consisting of both hardware and software modules.

The small robot shown in the video is an in-house development, and is responsible for the field of view measurement in the vehicle and checking the area all around the car. Particular care is taken to ensure that there are no gaps in the detection range. But why is this so important? If there were even just a small gap in the detection range, it is possible that a narrow object - for instance a lamppost, street sign or pillar - might not be detected. As a consequence, the driver would receive no warning and could well run into the object.

After setup calibration, a one-off occurrence, a complete automated programme of manoeuvres involving obstacles being approached by the vehicle is carried out. The carrier robot continuously corrects its own trajectory, and can easily be fitted with other test bodies for the next test series. The measured values are continuously recorded throughout the automated test sequence.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES
A further feature of EDscene is its ability to recognise small, low-lying obstacles. These include kerb edges and other sharp edges which are difficult for the ultrasonic sensors to detect. While the vehicle repeatedly approaches the obstacle, EDscene automatically evaluates the measurements.
The ability to differentiate between real and apparent obstacles is another enormous challenge for the tool. Disruptive factors such as heavy rain and uneven road surfaces can have an extreme influence on this process. It is important for everything to function safely, because a false activation can also quickly become dangerous. During validation, we can move the vehicles exactly in the borderline areas, record the measured values and evaluate them on site.

MANOEUVRE-BRAKING ASSISTANT
The manoeuvre-braking assistant is also used in these situations, and can also carry out an emergency stop. To validate this function, the vehicle is driven up to the obstacle at different speeds in order to reproduce potential situations in everyday life. In this way, the behaviour of the vehicle and the performance of the manoeuvre-brake assistant are examined. The important thing is that the vehicle can recognise the object reliably and in time. The best thing about EDscene: it can be put to mobile use. We will come to you and carry out the tests on site.

There are already plans to further develop the EDscene for camera, lidar and radar sensors. Customer-specific test procedures can also be defined and implemented.
