Fuel pumps are very simple
Fuel pumps are very simple machines, its a DC device so if you reverse the wires, the pump will pump backwards. The pump uses the gasoline as both a lubricant and a coolant, so if you notice that your pump is unusually loud, chances are you are either out of gas or there is a blockage. Notice the difference in the video from when the pump is pumping air and pumping fluid, much louder. Also, since the gas is a lubricant for the pump, try not to run it dry if you can help it. Finally, yes running water through a fuel pump can cause it to seize with rust if you let it sit with water in it, but you can test it with water if you rinse or air it out afterwards sufficiently.
