When someone from their past returns to exact revenge, the Powerpuff Girls must unite to save Townsville. But are they strong enough to defeat this new menace? Or is Townsville doomed?

A WORD FROM CHRIS

In 2016, I made a Powerpuff Girls anti-bullying PSA short. It was just something fun that I wanted to do and I didn't think much of it at the time. Well to my surprise, it ended up becoming the most watched video on my channel with (at the time of this posting) over 7 million views. I never expected a silly little short like that to blow up the way it did, but it did, and I couldn't be happier. I never had any intentions to follow the PSA up as I didn't think there was anything else to do with Powerpuff Girls..... Then the CW happened.

In 2020, it was announced that the CW was going to make a dark and gritty Powerpuff Girls series. Two words that should NEVER be associated with PPG. Naturally, it divided fans. I purposefully chose to just stay in my corner and not do anything. I made my 2016 short and it was still getting views, so I was content. Then the CW pilot script was leaked. At first I thought it was a joke. A poor parody script written deliberately to upset and troll people. But the CW never denounced the script as fake. They just sent cease and desist letters to the leakers.

So out of morbid curiosity, I read the script, and I was shocked. I could not believe it script was the actual script for the pilot. I could not believe it ever made it past the developmental stage, let alone being approved by execs who just threw money at it. It was everything the Powerpuff Girls were never supposed to be- cynical, cruel, angry, spiteful. They were the Powerpuffs in name only, and I was livid.

Ever since the announcement of the new series, many people had been referencing my PSA saying "this is how you do PPG". While I appreciate the compliments, if actually tasked with adapting the Powerpuff Girls into live action series, my PSA is actually NOT how I would do it. Enter my new short!

I wanted to make my 2021 short the anti-CW Powerpuff Girls. I wanted to embrace everything we already knew and loved about the cartoon, and try and translate as much as I could into live action. I started with the obvious- the girls cannot hate each other or the professor. They are a functioning family and I refuse to betray that aspect for the sake of needless drama.

I started off the story with the girls' birthday. They are clearly young adults in this, and I felt a birthday sequence with the professor lamenting about how they grew up would be a good way to just get everyone up to speed. I also wanted to show that despite the girls being grown up, their personalities were still intact, as properly showcased in the argument over rent, and the charades scene. I also gave Sara Bellum a much deserved promotion as the new mayor of Townsville.

For the villain, Bunny was always my first choice. I loved Bunny's original episode, and knew that the guilt surrounding her demise would make for an awesome conflict. Naturally, it's not actually Bunny, which allows for the memory of the real Bunny to remain unblemished.

Production for this short was pure hell. I had originally scheduled two production days, set way in advance due actor availability. Then the night before day 1, the original actor cast as Bubbles dropped out of the project unexpectedly. In an effort to preserve day 2, I began the exhausting search for a new Bubbles. Thankfully, I was blessed with Julia Weaver who stepped into the part not 4 days before filming. Blinky alum Kelli Kickham and Lexsy McKowen rounded out the trio.

Two days before filming, I had a bad feeling that Ms. Bellum might be a no show. So I turned to Lindsey Bean (formerly Blossom from my 2016 short) and asked if she would be up for filling in "just in case". She agreed, and wouldn't you know it, the night before filming the original actor backed out due to health issues.

The day of filming was painful. It was hot as hell that day, and we could only run the air conditioner in between takes. Tom Proprofsky who played the professor had a scheduling conflict with a caretaker service that he volunteers, for which made him over 4 hours late. And when an actor in a scene isn't there, it's pretty hard to shoot around. Eventually he showed up and we were able to finish the first half of the movie.

The final nail in the coffin was HIM (Juni Cuevas) who unexpectedly had to reschedule as well. Thankfully, he gave me a 48 hour notice, but it forced me to change the final confrontation between Him and the girls. Instead of an actual ass kicking, I had to use some clever editing to make it seem like he was actually there and not filming nearly 3 weeks later.

All in all, it was one hell of a shoot, but I think the end result speaks for itself. I love the Powerpuff Girls, and I hope the CW takes notice.
