Aa Florida man stops reading just four books from breaking the Guinness World Record. He reason: He was gifted a book rest which made him feel nauseous. by not picking up the book, it helped to hide the monstrosity underneath

is this true?!

today, I am covering the steps to build this ohhh so popular book rest, with a few tweaks. it makes a cool gift, and it's an easy sell.

once in a while I prefer to build something new and unscripted. meaning i didnt put much planning into it beforehand. you'll see why i generally shy away from doing this in the next 15 minutes. i also tried to do a cool bending method which doesnt work so well on hardwoods.. another typical day in the shop.

to make this cool looking design I kind of made up the spacing as I went along, and drew it out on paper to make sure it looked alright.

Take this moment to pause the video, print the plans and follow along because this time you will need to write in a few measurements.. here is the cut listing for the infinity design.

i picked up both of these boards from Menards, one is __ and one is __ they are ____ (size) and will be plenty to complete probably two of these bookrests. I wanted a darker color contrast, and these are perfect.

It's a wee bit more manageable to rip smaller cuts than trying to man handle these longer boards. so I cut these two boards down to 22-1/2" pieces. i will be cutting them down to their 8" and 14" final sizes later. leaving a little extra incase the boards slip and slide around during glue up.

with my pieces cut to length. we need to rip these on the table saw.

Here are the sizes you need to write down in your plans. you can also take a screenshot to fill in later. you will need one of each measurement from your lighter and darker board.

I need all eyes on the screens please. do not cut your smaller pieces between the fence and your blade. that is a recipe for kick back. instead, measure the board, set the fence to that measurement, and deduct your measurement plus 1/8 for the blade kerf so your final product is the correct size.

i cut all of the pieces thinner than 3 quarters with this method, and, once all the smaller cuts are out of the way, the larger cuts leave your push stick with plenty of space between the blade and the fence

another tip is to cut all of you smaller sizes first, finishing with the larger pieces

with all the pieces organized, its time to glue them together. I am using titebond III, mainly because I have gallons of it behind me, but also because it is a little thinner than titebond II and Original, and easier to spread.

align your pieces following the plans, and to save a little time later on, clamp a board to the top and bottpm to save you a little time sanding later on.

another reason to leave the pieces long is so you can run them through your planer, if you have a planer. i didnt have one until last year. No judgement if you tackle smoothing this out with a few sanders. Ive been there.

wierd how its been 4 days but Im still wearing the same shirt...
