We discovered the Grotta Gigante
We discovered the Grotta Gigante in Trieste, one of the largest accessible caves in the world. The sheer size of the cavity is impressive, and there are lots of interesting formations #stalagmite, #stalactite, and even a bear skeleton! #grottagigante
The tour warns that the cave gets as low as 15*C and recommends wrapping up warm. For people from tropical and subtropical climates, this is important. For people from temperature climates, the cave is refreshingly cool compared to the hot Italian summers.
The constant temperatures throughout the year have led to the placement of scientific instruments including the two Grotta Gigante horizontal pendulums which hang down from about 100 m (330 ft) and are the longest geodetic pendula in the world.
