The faded take-off is a great way to setup positioning and set the rail to cross step towards to nose.

Faded takeoffs are often used on slower forming waves or when a wave is caught far outside of the pocket where the wave is softer.

Faded takeoffs help position us behind steeper sections on the wave. A steeper wave face will offer more speed potential and provides more opportunities for maneuvers.

The goal of the faded takeoff is to give the wave more time to steepen up down the line.

1 - To fade your takeoff, paddle into the wave at an angle towards the peak. Maintain pressure on the inside rail to stay high on the wave. In a busy line-up, it’s important to communicate your intended direction.

2 - Pop-up with your feet towards the tail of the board. About 3 inches behind the midpoint, This will keep the carve sharp. The further back our back foot is the tighter and faster the turn will be.

3 - To turn, apply pressure on the carve button located near your back foot.

4 - Now that we have faded the takeoff, allowing the wave time to stand up in front we can cross-step or shuffle our way up to the board to accelerate.
