The 2024 World Championship of Legends has reached its thrilling climax as the Pakistan Champions and India Champions face off in the grand finale. The battle for supremacy has hit its peak in this inaugural edition of the tournament as arch-rivals are all set to meet in the summit clash.
We return to Edgbaston in Birmingham the venue where it all began for the final chapter of this epic saga. Finishing as the second-placed team Pakistan clashed with the West Indies in the semifinals and secured an emphatic victory. Despite a shaky start Pakistan posted a formidable 198 thanks to crucial contributions from Kamran Akmal and Younis Khan and a late flourish by Aamer Yamin and Sohail Tanvir. Sohail Khan played a pivotal role with the ball helping his side clinch a place in the final. Younis Khan who had a quiet tournament finally made his mark in the semifinal.
As the final approaches Pakistan will be hoping for significant contributions from Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi with the bat. The team has been heavily reliant on their top order placing much of the responsibility on Kamran Akmal Sharjeel Khan and Shoaib Maqsood. Shoaib Malik has excelled in both batting and bowling while Sohail Khan found his bowling mojo against the West Indies. These are promising signs for Pakistan with Malik Sohail Tanvir and Wahab Riaz consistently delivering crucial breakthroughs. On the other hand India were far from their best in the league stage and it came down to the final ball of their last league game against South Africa to secure qualification.
Scraping through to the semifinals India Champions faced a formidable Australian side in top form making India the underdogs for the clash. However they rose to the occasion and played their best cricket of the tournament to make it through to the final. The batting was phenomenal with skipper Yuvraj Singh stepping up in a big game as he always did for India. Robin Uthappa continued his fine form while the Pathan brothers were absolutely on fire both smashing quick-fire fifties. The only thing missing was Suresh Raina's elegance and who knows maybe he’s saving his best for the final.
The bowlers were equally impressive with Harbhajan Singh delivering as he has throughout the tournament and Pawan Negi providing solid support. Rahul Shukla has emerged as a top bowler excelling with the new ball and nailing Yorkers at the death. Vinay Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni also looked good but they might consider bringing back RP Singh for the big game. This final gives a nostalgic feeling of the 2007 T20 World Cup final where many of these players faced off. Back then it was India who emerged as champions.
However Pakistan Champions defeated India Champions during the league phase and will be brimming with confidence. Yes the Men in Blue have found form at the perfect time but it’s a tough one to call given the fierce rivalry between these two sides. Both teams will give their all to win the championship. Whose side are you on?
