Taking a glance at the midsize luxury-sedan segment, the 2016 Infiniti Q70 is often overlooked, but it shouldn't be. With available V8 or hybrid power, a gorgeous look and a unique long-wheelbase trim level, the Q70 is fit for royalty. German automakers should be on the lookout: The Q70 is ready for competition. Here are five reasons why Infiniti's underdog might just surprise you.
Engine Choices
With 330 horsepower fresh out of the box, the Q70 has a base engine that definitely moves. There's even a hybrid model that kicks out 360 hp and returns a remarkable 34 miles per gallon on the highway. If that still isn't enough, there's the top-dog 420-hp V8, which hits 60 miles per hour in about 5 seconds flat. Of course, you don't get those hybrid fuel-economy numbers, but it sounds awesome when you hit the pedal. It sure is nice to compete with talent like the BMW 550i.
Sport-Sedan Handling
This car handles like a sport sedan should, thanks to a proper rear-wheel-drive layout. You can still opt for all-wheel drive, however. And putting the Q70 through its paces feels great: The steering is very precise, and the car feels smaller than it is through turns. Want a midsize luxury sedan that can keep up with sports cars on a twisty road? The Q70 happily obliges. Not to mention, it carries Infiniti's incredible reputation for reliability, too.
Luxurious Seating
It's pretty cool when a car's backrests have Bose speakers built into them but still provide great comfort at the same time. The Q70's rear seats are comfortable, too, and if you really want tons of space to stretch out, there's the longer-wheelbase Q70L, which gives you significantly more rear legroom but not nearly as much as a top executive car like a 7 Series or an S-Class. It doesn't feel right to call the luxurious Q70L a bargain -- call it a steal instead. Whatever term you prefer, it's a sure winner.
User-Friendly Technology
Infiniti decided to do away with the control knob between the seats for its infotainment system, and we think that was a smart move. The Q70 now has a functional control layout and a user-friendly ergonomic touchscreen. Popping open the owner's manual won't be necessary like it is with others in this segment. With the overload of technology these days, it's nice to have some simplicity.
Unique Style
The Infiniti design team deserves some praise for the Q70. Competition can't match the Q's curvaceous lines that flow from nose to tail. We're all tired of luxury sedans that all look alike, and the Q70 breaks the mold with a design that's as clean as they come.
