Introduction to Process Flow Charts (Lean Six Sigma)

Before we can improve a process, we need to first understand it.  Process flow charts help us with that understanding.  They show the sequence of process steps.  Here are some common symbols that we could use on our process map:

- Rectangle – activity
- Diamond – decision
- Ellipse – start/end
- Arrow – directional flow
- Circle – connector (on-page)
- Pentagon – connector (off-page)
- Rectangle with Curved Bottom – a document
- Rectangle with Interior Vertical Lines – a predefined process
