A heroes welcome was given to the Royal Anglians by the people of Norwich as the regiment exercised its right to the Freedom of the City today (Thursday November 22 2008).

Thousands of people lined the streets as the 1st Battalion of the Royal Anglian Regiment marked its homecoming from Afghanistan with a poignant parade through the city centre.

The regiment lined up outside City Hall where His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester inspected the troops and the Sheriff of Norwich Nick Williams gave them permission to march through the city, colours flying and bayonets fixed.

Among those also in attendance at the ceremony was HM Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk, Mr Richard Jewson, and General John McColl, the Colonel of the Regiment.

Then, accompanied by the Minden Band of the Queens Division, several hundred soldiers from the regiment, known as the Vikings, began their march in the sunshine from Gaol Hill.

They then marched along London Street, Queen Street, Tombland and into the Cathedral Close.

A thanksgiving and remembrance service was then held at Norwich Cathedral, where the Rt Revd Tom Burns, Bishop of the Armed Forces, gave the address.

The Sheriff told the regiment he felt sure that everyone watching the parade shared with him an enormous respect and admiration for the way you go about your duties.

You have just returned from six months in Afghanistan where you encountered a well equipped and determined enemy in difficult terrain and in an extremely testing climate, said Mr Williams.

We have read about the challenges you have faced with such professionalism, determination and bravery. Sadly you suffered fatalities and casualties and on this day I am sure all our thoughts are with the bereaved and those who are still suffering from the injuries.

The Royal Anglian Regiment enjoys a high reputation throughout the Army, and your performance in Afghanistan has enhanced that reputation.

Speaking immediately after the parade, Norwich City Council leader Steve Morphew said the people of Norwich had done the regiment proud by turning out in large numbers for their homecoming parade.

It was an impressive turnout by the people of Norwich to welcome home the regiment that has served us so well in Afghanistan, he said.

These are local lads and it is great to see so many local people turnout to give their support and show they care.

Just seeing their young faces reminds us of the impact of the loss of those who did not come home and the impact on the lives of those who were wounded.

The Battalion returned from a difficult six-month tour of Afghanistan last month, where they came under frequent attack, and nine members of the regiment lost their lives.

Based in Helmand province, they conducted more than 100 Company level operations and engaged more than 350 times with the enemy.
