We call it mating when a male and a female toad come closer for reproduction. During this process, the male toad holds the female toad with his front feet. After getting a firm hold, both of the toads remain engaged in this mating process for 12 hours. The toads approach the water surface for breathing and return to the deep water to complete the cycle.
During this cycle, the reproductive organs of the male and female toad, called cloacae, come closer, and the back of the female toad gets inflated because of hormonal changes. Cloacae is the region from where a female toad releases eggs and a male toad releases sperm. Now; the male fertilizes these eggs externally and implants them on the back of the female toad.
The skin of the female toad starts to hold the eggs within a few days in order to keep these eggs protected for the next 3-4 months. After this period of 3-4 months, froglets come out of the back of the female toad. After giving birth to around 60-100 froglets, the female toad sheds this layer from its back.
