This video highlights the newest baby gorilla at The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. Sully, an 8-year-old female, gave birth on July 14th to a baby girl named Kwame. Sully was first thought to be a male. When Sully arrived 4 years ago, zoo staff were told they were getting a 4-year-old male. This month, zoo staff was surprised to see Sully carrying a newborn. Now they know, Sully is a girl!
Why didn't the zoo know Sully was a girl? The zoo has shared that early on males and females are about the same size and until about age 8, they don't show any prominent sex organs. Also, gorilla newborns are much smaller than human babies and gorillas naturally have large abdomens, so they didn’t realize she was pregnant.
This is the 34th gorilla born at the Columbus Zoo. This is a welcome addition, especially since Western Lowland Gorillas are critically endangered. The zoo knows that this baby is a girl because they have inspected it closely, and they have sent pictures to a primate specialist.

There are 2 gorilla troops at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, for a total of 15 gorillas (Columbus, Ohio)
Troop 1
1 Ktembe - male, 3/13/97 is the newest of the Silverbacks at the Columbus Zoo,
2 Cassie - female, 8/16/93 she is the mother of Jamani.
3 Jamani - female, 4/15/20 parents are Cassie and Ktembe,
4 Nia - female, 1993 half-sister to Mo'ana and mother of Dotty, Nia came as an infant from the Oklahoma City Zoo to be reared in the surrogacy program.
5 Sue - female 2004, came from the Lincoln Park Zoo.
Troop 2
1 Mac (Macombo) - male1983, is father to JJ and accepted three surrogate infants into his group to date. He and his brother were the first surviving twins born in the western hemisphere - at the Columbus Zoo.
*** 2 SULLY - FEMALE - born in 2014 and is a half sibling of Zahra (they share the same father).
3 Tabibu - female April 1992, is JJ's mother, but she is close with all the kids in her group.
4 JJ - male 9/28/16, is the first offspring of mother Tabibu and father Mac.
5 Kinyanni - female 1983, surrogate mother to Kamoli.
6 Kamoli - male 2013, his parents did not show proper maternal care, so he was raised by surrogate mother, Kinyani.
7 Mo'ana - female 1983, half-sister to Nia.
8 Kamina - female 2014, born at the Oklahoma City Zoo, her mother could not care for her. She was moved to the Cincinnati Zoo but was unable to bond with a surrogate there. Ultimately, she was brought to Columbus, paired with the surrogate mother Toni, and successfully introduced into her present group.
9 Zahra female 9/9/17, born at the Milwaukee County Zoo. She was transferred to the Columbus Zoo after both her mother and father passed away and was placed with surrogate mother, Toni.
10 Kwame - female, born - 7/15/23 Mother Sully, father - Kamoli, the 10 year old male.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.
