The ornate lorikeet (Saudareos ornata), occasionally known as the ornate lory, belongs to the parrot family Psittaculidae. It is native to the Sulawesi archipelago in Indonesia and can be located in various habitats, including forests, woodlands, mangroves, and plantations, where it is commonly found. Taxonomy The ornate lorikeet was formally documented by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758, featured in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae, under the scientific name Psittacus ornatus. Linnaeus based his description on the "Lory Parrakeet," which had been previously described and illustrated in 1751 by George Edwards in his work "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds." Notably, Linnaeus incorrectly noted the bird's origin as "America," despite Edwards' explicit indication that the bird hailed from the "East Indies," specifically the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. In 2020, a molecular genetic analysis of lorikeets resulted in the reclassification of the ornate lorikeet from the genus Trichoglossus to a newly introduced genus, Saudareos. #parrot #parrots #pets #pet #petlover #petlovers #zoo #parrotlover #parrotlovers
