CBSE Class 10 Science Chapter 15 - Our Environment - The different steps in a food chain at which transfer of energy takes place are called trophic levels. Each organism in a food chain represents a different trophic level. The food producers consume the sunlight and then this solar energy is converted into the chemical energy. This energy is then further transferred to the trophic levels above the producers in the food chain like herbivores, small carnivores and top carnivores. But not all the energy is transferred in this process.
