Synthesis reactions (also called combination
Synthesis reactions (also called combination reactions) are the simplest type of chemical reaction. In a synthesis reaction two or more substances undergo a chemical reaction producing a new substance. This is written in the general format of:
A + B yields AB
An example of synthesis reaction is hydrogen and oxygen gas reacting to form water.
H2 + O2 yields H2O
Here, the H2 and O2 combine to form water. Since we have two substances reacting for form a single substance this is considered a synthesis reaction.
Synthesis reactions in the video:
Fe + O2 yields Fe2O3 -- at beginning of video
Mg + O2 yields MgO -- middle of video
Note that we don’t consider the coefficients used to balance the equations when determining if a reaction is synthesis. For example:
2Fe + 3O2 yields 2Fe2O3
It is still considered synthesis.
