How to Crochet a Treble Crochet Stitch (tr) Video Tutorial. This is a U.K. Stitch. In this video tutorial you will learn how to make a slip knot, foundation chain, crochet turning chain, UK treble crochet stitch along the 1st and 2nd rows.

Treble Crochet Abbreviation in UK Patterns: tr or trc

US Equivalent Stitch: Double Crochet (dc)

Of all the basic crochet stitches the treble crochet stitch is the most commonly used. It creates a softer fabric that is more of an open stitch than it's UK tighter brother stitches, the double crochet and half treble crochet.

You can create afghan blankets, sweaters, pillow covers, socks, booties, pants, jackets, scarves, mittens, beanies, granny squares and shawls.

The treble crochet stitch really is the all-rounder stitch. I think it is because it does create that softer fabric and it is a longer stitch that takes less time to finish a project. It is the perfect stitch to whip up something quickly.

You will come to love the treble crochet stitch and it will become your most reliable friend in crochet; especially as a beginner.

To crochet a Treble Crochet Stitch use the following instructions:

After having made a foundation chain, let's start the 1st row,
1. Wrap the yarn over the hook
2. Insert the hook into the top loop of the 4th chain from the hook
3. Wrap the yarn over the hook
4. Draw the yarn through the chain stitch; leaving 3 loops on the hook
5. Wrap the yarn over the hook
6. Draw the yarn through the first 2 loops on the hook; leaving 2 loops on the hook
7. Wrap the yarn over the hook
8. Draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook; leaving 1 loop on the hook

You've completed a treble crochet stitch.

To continue on making treble crochet stitches into the remaining chain stitches of the foundation chain, repeat from Steps 1 to 8, except Step 2 will now change to 'Place the hook into the top loop of the next chain stitch.'

Once you've completed the above, it's time to start on the 2nd row,
1. Turn your work
2. Make 3 chain stitches (this counts as 1 treble crochet stitch and is called a crochet turning chain)
3. Wrap the yarn over the hook
4. Insert your hook from front to back into both loops of the 2nd stitch from the hook
5. Wrap the yarn over the hook
6. Draw the yarn through both loops of the stitch
7. Wrap the yarn over the hook
8. Draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook
9. Wrap the yarn over the hook
10. Draw through 2 loops on the hook

You've completed the first treble crochet stitch on the 2nd row.

Continue the steps from 3 - 10 to finish the row of treble crochet stitches, except the 4th step will now change to 'Insert your hook from front to back into both loops of the next stitch'.

When making the last treble crochet stitch at the end of the row, crochet it into the top of the crochet turning chain (this is the 3rd chain stitch of the turning chain; you will see it next to the stitch that you just crocheted.) This is because when crocheting a treble crochet stitch the 3 chain stitches (which is the turning chain) is counted as a stitch therefore it is crocheted into.

Repeat Row 2 for all following rows to create a fabric made of treble crochet stitches.
