The Turkish President's plans to visit war-torn Sarajevo were abandoned Monday after fears over his safety.

Twenty minutes after Suleyman Demirel would have touched down rebel Serbs opened fire on the Bosnian capital's airport.

The President  was diverted to Zenica where he's been inspecting Turkish troops.

On Saturday unknown gunmen fired on a U-N plane carrying Turkish officials and journalists as it approached the airport.

The U-N helicopter carrying the Turkish Premier landed at Zenica in central Bosnia, despite continuing fears for his safety.

Suleyman Demirel failed to get safety guarantees from the Bosnian Serbs and cancelled his trip to the Bosnian capital.

The decision probably saved his life.

Rebel Serbs opened fire on the airport just twenty minutes before the plane that was to have carried the president would have landed.  U-N Peacekeepers fired back on the gunmen.

On Saturday a U-N plane carrying Turkish officials and journalists was hit by gunfire as it approached the airport. There was also a marked increase in shelling of the suburbs that surround the airport on Sunday night.

At Zenica a Turkish guard of honour was laid on to greet the Turkish premier, the first to visit Bosnia.

There are fifteen hundred Turkish troops based here.

Demirel then was then driven under armed escort to the main base in the centre of town where he again inspected another guard of honour.

On arrival there he said he will try again to visit Sarajevo after returning to the Croatian port of Split.

Security has long been a concern at Sarajevo airport, Demirel was forced to scrap a planned visit to Bosnia last summer when Serbs wouldn't guarantee the security of his plane.
