The Earth needs better climate laws. In the last twenty years, climate legislation all over the world has increased dramatically; and yet, global temperatures are still rising. Climate legislation needs to be rethought and reimagined. One proposed solution has been to hold citizens’ assemblies that bring together randomly selected citizens to make policy recommendations on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Dr Leslie-Anne Duvic Paoli is a leading scholar in public international law, with a passion for sustainability governance. She is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Environmental Law at The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London and Deputy Director of its Climate Law and Governance Centre. Her scholarship covers the ambiguous role played by environmental principles, the global legal implications of the clean energy transition and the role of citizens’ assemblies in the making of climate law and policy. Leslie-Anne has held teaching and research positions in various leading academic institutions around the world, including in Switzerland, France, Australia and the UK. She is a passionate educator of the next generation of sustainability leaders and has extensive experience working with decision-makers and other stakeholders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
